Lab Report: Know When to Trove ’em

It seems like every article of mine begins the same way these days; Krull is busted, and there are lots of cool ways to utilize it in both formats. Our focus for this piece will be on a FPS Trove strategy in Throne that draws inspiration from camat0’s various Trove builds. Since Trove requires pilots to constantly make meaningful decisions over the course of a game, you’ll definitely want to practice a lot before registering this deck in a tournament. I’ve been misplaying a lot with this deck on stream recently, but I promise it’s more than worth it to give it a try!

Overview

FPS Trove is a new take on the Praxis Trove strategy that centers around our namesake relic alongside a twelve-card Krull package. As a general rule, it’s pretty hard to go wrong with cheap, powerful units alongside cheap reanimation and card advantage. Our spell suite is built such that Trove hits Know When to Hold e’m (KWTHE) on one, Devour on two and Mirror Image on three. KWTHE gets the Krull party started, often reanimating a two-drop that immediately ticks Trove up to two and casts Devour. Mirror Image on a Merchant helps us market-juggle Krull(s), which is even more insane in practice than it reads in theory.

In order to facilitate Trove our unit curve includes twelve one-drops, ten two-drops and ten three-drops. We’re typically looking for a healthy mix of ones, twos and threes so that our Troves reach their full potential. Kato, Arena Herald is unique here in that it spawns a one drop to trigger Trove on one and often replaces itself with a shade that triggers Trove on two. Assuming it lives long enough to attack, Whispering Wind is one of our most impactful units. Wind converts a Merchant into a Krull, which reanimates the Merchant and nets us a market card in exchange for Krull, which then becomes available for market juggling.

Shrine To Karvet is a crucial market card because it pushes through tons of damage and offsets most of the health we lose from Krull triggers. Strange Burglar and Wyatt’s Junkyard help us refuel in various situations, while Edge of Uprising serves as a versatile answer and an occasional win condition against unit-light strategies (think Unitless control). Combust‘s inclusion here should be no surprise; it’s a versatile answer to problematic units with occasional upside as a Shrine and/or Trove enabler. Despite all these great options, we’ll often juggle Krull more frequently than the number of times we grab other cards from our market. In breaking news, Krull is amazing yet again!

Tips and Tricks

  • Kato, Arena Herald and Shadowlands Guide spawn multiple units of different costs, meaning either can serve more than one purpose in a Trove sequence. Guide is a three-cost unit that reanimates a one-cost unit, while Kato is a two-cost unit that spawns a one-cost unit when it enters play and a two-cost unit (which can sacrifice itself to spawn another one-cost unit) when it dies. These interactions provide us with numerous additional ways to complete a Trove sequence.
  • Make sure to leave enough power open to reanimate the unit you want when you trigger Trove on one. While we often assume that Krull’s trigger is free, the hits will add up for decks like FPS Trove that intend to trigger Krull numerous times. Every point of health matters, so don’t just go around wasting them due to poor sequencing!
  • Whispering Wind always draws Krull (assuming you still have at least one Krull in your deck) when you discard a three-cost card to it. It’s possible to draw Krull when you pitch a lower cost card to Wind, but it’s not guaranteed. Pitching excess power to Wind is a convenient way to mitigate flooding.
  • Since FPS Trove can turn the corner with exceptional speed, it’s especially important to try and plan out your sequences multiple turns in advance. Mapping out your upcoming plays will help you execute the deck’s game plan effectively and tighten up your technical play.

Now that we Know How to Trove ’em, I’d like to take a moment to discuss Krull for the umpteenth time. Over the past couple weeks, it’s been increasingly difficult for me to suggest non-Krull decks to competitive players, even including my TJS Control list. As a content creator focused on providing competitively-oriented insights into Eternal, I believe that it would be disingenuous of me to recommend non-Krull decks in my articles until things change. That said, I’ll continue to write articles featuring Krull for the time being since I love creating content and don’t plan to stop anytime soon. I may also start writing theory-heavy articles as a way to spice up my content every so often, so be on the lookout for that!

Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you in a Trove mirror on ladder.
